[MLB] Winter Meetings 2008-09
« am: 3 November 2008, 18:14:41 »
The Dodgers' bid to re-sign Manny Ramirez -- or part ways with him without causing a fan uproar -- will start in the next four days, as general manager Ned Colletti is expected to meet with agent Scott Boras for the first time this off-season at the general managers' meetings in Dana Point.

"We owe it to the player and Scott to hear them out and for them to hear us out," Colletti said.

Boras, based in Newport Beach, also represents the Angels' top free-agent filer, Mark Teixeira.

Boras said the 36-year-old Ramirez is worthy of a six-year deal, arguing that his client's value shouldn't be diminished by his age because he hasn't shown any signs of deterioration at the plate.

The agent said he expected Teixeira, 28, to get an even longer deal.

Yankees, Angels show interest in Peavy
Jake Peavy | Padres
Most of the discussion about Jake Peavy has centered on National League teams. Now, though, a pair of American League teams have entered the race, with both the Angels and Yankees now on the list, according to San Diego GM Kevin Towers. The Braves, Cubs, Dodgers, Cardinals and Astros have been identified as preferences by Peavy, but, according to Towers, the right-hander has agreed to consider the Angels and Yankees. Towers has ranked the teams, but declined to give any indication on which team, at the moment, is the frontrunner

Sources: Cubs now favorites for Peavy
Jake Peavy | Padres | Interested: Cubs, Braves, Yankees?
Sources have told FoxSports.com that the Cubs have emerged as a front-runner for Peavy, perhaps even ahead of the Braves.

But ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney reports that Padres GM Kevin Towers is prepared to keep the 2007 NL Cy Young Award winner if the Padres are unable to get value in return that is commensurate with his remarkable track record.

Given the Padres' move to cut payroll and other uncertainties within the organization, the team might be forced to make a below-value deal, although Peavy could use his no-trade clause to stall or steer negotiations. According to Olney, the Braves and Padres may well strike a deal built around shortstop Yunel Escobar, center fielder Jordan Schafer, pitcher Charlie Morton, and one more pitching prospect. The Padres are known to have interest in left-hander Jeff Locke, a 20-year-old who pitched in Class A last season.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that the Padres would still like to get hot pitching prospect Tommy Hanson, but the Braves have refused to include him.

Meanwhile, the New York Daily News says the Yankees' chances of acquiring Peavy are getting better considering the roadblocks the Padres have encountered with other teams. A source told the Daily News that the Yankees could put together a package built around Phil Hughes and Austin Jackson, although they would need to include a few more players, perhaps even Ian Kennedy. The source also said the Padres have no interest in Robinson Cano.
